Shandong Deepens Ties with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan

The Conference on Deepening Cooperation between Shandong and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan was held in Jinan on the morning of March 23, 2021. With the theme of “New Pattern, New Opportunity, New Development”, the conference aims to provide new opportunities and build a new platform for Shandong to further enhance the level of exchanges and cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Liu Jiayi, Secretary of the CPC Shandong Provincial Committee, attended the conference and delivered a keynote speech. Li Ganjie, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shandong Provincial Committee and Governor of Shandong Province, presided over the conference. Liu Jiayi pointed out that the conference is the first major economic and trade event for Shandong to embark a new journey, and it’s also the first time in the history of Shandong to jointly hold a project promotion event with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. He said that Shandong is making every effort to build a legal, international and market-based business environment, cultivate a minimalist government ecology, provide a full-period green service, implement the strictest IPR protection policy and create a “safe haven” for innovation and entrepreneurship, to make investors feel more secure, comfortable and at ease in Shandong. Liu expressed his hope that Shandong would join hands with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to share development opportunities and create a better future in five aspects of expanding new space for industrial cooperation, creating a new engine for scientific and technological development, creating a new level for economic and trade cooperation, sharing new dividends of domestic demand expansion and building a new platform for cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Li Ganjie said that Shandong will make efforts to improve the thinking and measures of deepening cooperation, highlight key areas, lay emphasis on platform carriers, improve policy systems, strengthen precise docking, and enhance the level of cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in all aspects. At the same time, Shandong will make every effort to promote the implementation of the cooperation consensus, formulate work plans, and ensure the achievement of a number of cooperation results as soon as possible. Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Leung Chun-ying, Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Ho Iat Seng, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce Wang Bingnan, and other guests respectively made a video or live speech on how to better strengthen Shandong’s cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan under the new situation. A total of 41 key foreign-funded projects were signed at the conference, with a total investment of US $5.22 billion and a contracted foreign investment of US $1.41 billion, mainly involving equipment manufacturing, new-generation information technology, medical care and health care, new energy, new materials, modern agriculture, modern marine industry and modern service.

Shandong Consumer Market Thrives During Spring Festival Holiday

Shandong's consumer market saw a strong rebound during the Spring Festival holiday, with retail sales hitting a record high, according to local officials. [Photo/IC]     According to data from the Shandong Provincial Department of Commerce, the sales of 505 key retail enterprises monitored in the province were valued at 4.4 billion yuan ($681.87 million) over the week-long holiday, up 40.12 percent year on year, while consumption among 11 categories of goods saw positive growth.   Local consumption of food, beverages, tobacco and alcohol products, clothing, shoes and hats, and needles and textiles grew by 15.63 percent, 32.69 percent, 62.95 percent, 116.25 percent, 75.59 percent, and 22.43 percent, respectively.   Sales of automobiles rose 65.28 percent year on year, while sales of home appliances and audio equipment rose 39.35 percent.   Local authorities said that the province held a series of activities to stimulate domestic demand and consumption via both online and offline channels during the Spring Festival. Shandong Foreign Trade Surges in 2020

The foreign trade of Shandong province increased by 7.5 percent year-on-year in 2020, hitting 2.2 trillion yuan (about $340.7 billion), according to a report at a news conference held on Jan 29 by the Information Office of the Shandong Provincial People's Government.   Last year, the province's exports were valued at 1.31 trillion yuan, up 17.3 percent year-on-year, while imports totaled 895.46 billion yuan, down 4.1 percent.   In 2020, the Shandong government launched targeted measures to push for the resumption of work to minimize losses caused by the outbreak, as well as intensified efforts to stabilize foreign trade and investment and ensure the smooth operation of foreign trade industrial and supply chains.   Over the past year, the cargo throughput of the province's ports reached 1.69 billion tons, while container throughput reached 31.91 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), ranking second and fourth in China, respectively.   The throughput of foreign trade cargo reached 873 million tons, up 5.2 percent year-on-year, maintaining a national lead.   Last year, there were 2,313 newly established foreign-funded service enterprises in Shandong province, up 24.2 percent year-on-year, and the province's actual utilized foreign capital was valued at $12.44 billion, up 26.1 percent year-on-year.   South Korean and Japanese investment in Shandong increased significantly, up 136.4 percent and 115.7 percent, respectively.
